課程概述

This course is designed for the MBA-IB students in Taiwan (in Asia, or on Earth) to examine managerial issues of international business by laying ground and a framework them. In addition, this course also serves as a cornerstone between introductory and advanced/diverse courses.

Teaching Methods

Careful blending of the lecture (L), videotape (V), and case method (C) will be used to arouse your interests along the learning process. Besides, this course intends to make the best use of internet availability at NTU by setting up a course website: https://ceiba.ntu.edu.tw/971multinational. Thanks to the Teaching Assistant 鄭貴揚(d94724015@ntu.edu.tw), the instructor will ask for the participants to adopt e-mail and web-based systems to facilitate our communication and to share our teaching and presentation materials as much as possible. Moreover, IBM is the foundation course for IB majors and these teaching methods shall aim at combining both theoretical and practical aspects. As a result, the instructor expects to develop more of your technical, conceptual and communicational skills relevant to develop your career as an outstanding International Business Manager (IBMer).

課程目標
This course is designed for the MBA-IB students in Taiwan (in Asia, or on Earth) to examine managerial issues of international business by laying ground and a framework them. In addition, this course also serves as a cornerstone between introductory and advanced/diverse courses. Specifically, the instructor intends to cultivate students the following capabilities:
a) to become familiar with the field of IB, the terms used in this profession (e.g., MNEs – Multinational Enterprises), and the broader environmental context managers and firms face;
b) to gain an understanding of the “acquiring tools” of international business, namely, the theories of international trade and investment;
c) to analyze the strategic issues that most MNEs face, such as the competitive, strategic, organizational, and management challenge;
d) to probe into the workings and different functions of international business, such as the human resources management, marketing management and corporation government.

Grading System

1. Class participation: You are expected to contribute your best to class discussion and case analyses. Just showing your presence at classroom will only be graded as zero. This portion of grade is determined by (i) how well you articulate your views and analyses and (ii) how well you build upon others' argument and make yours. To facilitate the flows of the class, you have to do textbook Opening Case preparation. You will be cold called to summarize the text with appropriate comments and provide local examples to verify them. Alternatively, you can, by your choice, make up your participation by providing summary and comments on the In Focus or Closing Case. Technically, these preparation should be limited to 1 page and post to the course website 24-hour ahead of our meeting.

2. Group case report: (i) Text-case: There will be 13 text-cases for this course. Each designated group will have 15’ (10-15 ppt slides approximately) for synopsis and some 10’ for Q&A; however, they can be used jointly. Organization of your group presentation and written report (in PPT備忘稿 format) must focus on the problem identification, decision-making nature, and implementation issues. (ii) Local-case (本地對映個案): Every group is also going to work on a local-case that correspond to your text-case, first writing your own case study and then solve the problem. The first part will be a case study for 1 page focusing on a hard-to-tackle problem that corresponds to your text-case. The second part will be your analysis and discussion to the problem, which should take about 2-4 pages. The last part will be your decision-making and action to the problem, which also take about 2-4 pages. All together, the ideal length should be approximately 5-9 pages, excluding attachments such as figures and tables.

3. Midterm and final exam: Two exams are designed to divide the course load in half; each covers about 8 chapters of the textbook. The format will be a combination of multiple choice (40%), terminology (30%), and short essays (30%). Also note that no make-up test will be provided in any circumstance.

4. Group topical paper: Each participant will focus on a specific topic, which transcends a common phenomenon of IBM. You need to combine theories, and existing literatures, and corporate practices. Likely topics are Ethical Issues and MNCs, Cultural Change and MNCs, Integration and Disintegration of the Global Supply Chain, etc. Again, determination of your choice is set in the 10th week.
